FIH Recap: No. 15 USA Earns First Pro League Point, Falls to No. 4 England in Shootout

Logo Credit: USA Field Hockey

April 27 —

No. 15 USA saw an early 2-0 lead disappear as they fell to No. 4 England in a shootout in the final game of a two-game set on Sunday in Chapel Hill.

With a fast-paced energy to open the game, the USA and England both found scoring opportunities in the offensive circle, but it remained scoreless in the first ten minutes of play. After Erin Matson (North Carolina) drew a penalty corner late in the quarter, Megan Rodgers (California) scored on the rebound from a Beth Yeager (Princeton) drag flick to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The USA felt the pressure from England as they searched for the equalizer, but goalkeeper Kelsey Bing (Stanford) and the defense held strong to keep them off the board.

The USA showed how defense leads to offense early in the second quarter as Fusine Govaert (Boston College) made a defensive stop and transitioned the ball up to Matson, who connected with Maddie Zimmer (Northwestern) that led to a penalty corner. Danielle Grega (Old Dominion) found the back of the cage to extend the USA lead to 2-0 after tipping in a hard push from Matson. England continued their attacking pressure to cut into the USA’s lead, but the USA defense came up with the stops to keep a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The third quarter opened with a back and forth attack between the USA and England. Matson and Zimmer continued to find each other in the offensive circle but were unable to piece anything together to extend their lead. England found some good looks in the USA circle, including a drag flick that went off the post.

England broke through in the early stages of the fourth quarter when Pippa Lock found the back of the cage after a goal mouth scramble to cut the USA’s lead 2-1. England controlled most of the play in the fourth quarter as they continued to pressure the USA defense in hopes of finding the game-tying goal. In the final two minutes of the quarter, England tied up the game at 2-2 after Bing had stopped the straight sweep on the penalty corner, but Sophie Hamilton corralled the rebound. The USA earned a penalty corner in the final minute of regulation, but Ally Hammel’s sweep was saved by goalkeeper Sabbie Heesh to force the shootout.

The USA fell 3-1 in the shootout as Matson was the lone USA player to score. The USA earned their first point of the FIH Pro League season in the tie with England.

There will be time for rest and reset as the USA will not play again until they travel to Belgium to face No. 6 Spain for a pair of games June 11-12.
