ACC/Big Ten Weekend Roundup: Hat Tricks, Shutouts and OT Winners

#1 Northwestern 6, #14 Boston College 0

Scoring three goals in the first quarter, no. 1 Northwestern didn’t look back as they blanked no. 14 Boston College 6-0. Chloe Relford opened the scoring in the first quarter, followed by Bente Baekers and Ana Medina Garcia to take an early lead. Maddie Zimmer and Lane Herbert scored 33 seconds apart in the second quarter to extend the lead to 5-0. Peyton Halsey capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter for the 6-0 win. Annabel Skubisz made two saves in the win for her second straight shutout.  

Stanford 1, Michigan State 0 (SO) 

Michigan State and Stanford combined for 33 shots in regulation and overtime, but a shootout was needed to decide the winner. Stanford’s Caroline Guden scored the shootout winner as Stanford edged Michigan State. The Spartans held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners. Monique Jardell made eight saves in the loss.  

Indiana 3, California 2 (OT)  

Anna Mozeleski converted on a penalty stroke with 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Indiana a 3-2 win over California on the road. California took a 2-0 lead early in the third quarter. Jemima Cookson scored twice in the fourth quarter to tie the game up and send it to overtime. Indiana outshot California 14-13 and Arabella Loveridge made three saves.

#12 Virginia 3, James Madison 2 (OT)  

Adele Iacobucci set up Laura Janssen for the overtime winner as no. 12 Virginia edged James Madison 3-2. James Madison took an early 1-0 lead, but Lilly Hengerer responded to tie it up 1-1. JMU retook the lead midway through the second quarter. Noa Boterman tied the game with under two minutes remaining in regulation. Virginia outshot JMU 14-8 and Tyler Kennedy made two saves.

#2 North Carolina 4, Penn 0  

Ryleigh Heck opened the scoring for the second straight game as no. 2 North Carolina blanked Penn 4-0. Erin Matson and Kiersten Thomassey scored less than minute apart in the second quarter to give North Carolina a 3-0 lead before halftime. Meredith Sholder capped off the scoring early in the third quarter after deflecting a pass from Siestke Bruning. Kylie Walbert and Abigal Taylor combined for the shutout.  

#5 Iowa 6, Saint Louis 0 

Alex Wesneski and Ciara combined for the last four goal in no. 5 Iowa’s 6-0 shutout of Saint Louis. Annika Herbine opened the scoring off a pass from Smith. Anthe Nijziel added a goal of her own off a penalty corner and Wesneski scored less than minute later for a 3-0 Hawkeyes lead. Smith added a pair of goals and Wesneski capped off the scoring with a penalty corner tally. Grace McGuire and Mia Magnotta combined for the shutout, tallying one save.  

Michigan 9, Central Michigan 0  

Abby Tamer and Alana Richardson combined for four goals in the first quarter as no. 3 Michigan routed Central Michigan 9-0 in their home opener. Tamer added a third goal in the third quarter to complete the hat trick and Sarah Pyrtek, Nina Apoola, Kate McLaughlin and Lora Clarke netted their first goals of the season in the win. The Michigan defense held Central Michigan to one shot and two corners.  

#4 Maryland 7, #18 Duke 2 

No. 4 Maryland scored four times in the fourth quarter to rout no. 18 Duke 7-2. Duke opened the scoring early when Issy Carey scored on a penalty corner. Maryland responded with a pair of goals in the second quarter from Hope Rose and Maura Verleg to take a 2-1 lead. Leah Crouse, Bibi Donraadt, Margot Lawn, Emma DeBerdine and Kylee Niswonger contributed to the five goal second half. Maryland outshot Duke 23-4 and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.  

Syracuse 6, Columbia 2  

Quirine Comans recorded a hat trick as no. 10 Syracuse defeated Columbia 6-2 for their first home win. Charlotte de Vries, Lieke Leeggangers and Comans scored in a span of four minutes to give Syracuse an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Comans tallied her second goal of the day in the second quarter when she tipped in a pass from de Vries. Willemijn Boogert added a goal early in the fourth quarter, followed by another Comans goal for the hat trick. Brooke Borzymowski made two saves.  

#22 Ohio State 4, Lehigh 0  

No. 22 Ohio State used four different goal scorers in a 4-0 win over Leigh, their third straight shutout. Leanne Bough got the scoring started in the first quarter converting on a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead. Emma Goldean found Cameryn Forgash to take a 2-0 lead right before the half. Zella Bailey got on the scoresheet when she tapped in a Makenna Webster between the legs pass to extend the lead to 3-0. Claudia Thomas closed out the scoring when she deflected in a ball from Webster. Abby Danson made one save in the win.  

#9 Louisville 2, #13 Princeton 1  

Katie Schenider tallied a goal and assist as no. 9 Louisville edged no. 13 Princeton 2-1. It was a tightly contested game in the first two quarters, but Schneider broke the tie after she deflected a pass from Kelsey McCrudden. Mattie Tabor scored late in the third quarter after receiving a pass from Schneider. Princeton scored late in the fourth quarter, but Louisville held on for the win. Sasha Elliot made three saves in the win.  

Saturday 

#11 Penn State 6, Albany 2 

Sophia Gladieux netted a hat trick as no. 11 Penn State rolled past Albany 6-2. The Nittany Lions scored three times in the first quarter with goals from Grace Wallis, Gladieux and Carly Gannon. Albany scored twice in the second quarter to make it a one goal game, but Gladieux added two goals in the third quarter to extend the lead. Jemma Punch capped off the scoring early in the fourth quarter. Penn State outshot Albany 21-3 and held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.  

Friday 

#4 Maryland 3, #14 Boston College 1  

No. 4 Maryland scored two unanswered goals to edge no. 14 Boston College 3-1. Rose got the Terrapins on the board two minutes into the contest on a breakaway goal. Boston College responded a minute later after Peyton Hale scored on a penalty corner. Maryland retook the lead early in the second quarter as Crouse found the back of the net set up by Lawn. Rose found Donraadt late in the fourth quarter to give Maryland a 3-1 lead. Carine Van Weichen made four saves for Boston College in the loss.

#12 Virginia 1, Temple 0 

Boterman scored the game-winnining goal early in the second quarter as no. 12 Virginia edged Temple in their home opener. The Cavaliers outshot the Owls 11-3 and held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners. Kennedy made one save in the victory for her first shutout of the season.  

#2 North Carolina 4, #13 Princeton 3  

Matson found the back of the cage twice as no. 2 North Carolina edged no. 13 Princeton. Heck opened the scoring for the Tar Heels with a tap in goal. but Princeton responded with a goal of their own off a penalty corner. North Carolina and Princeton combined for three more goals before halftime from Matson, Lisa Slinkert and Beth Yeager. Matson with under four minutes remaining to take a 4-2 lead. The Tigers made it interesting with two minutes left when they converted on a penalty stroke, but Kylie Walbert fended off a penalty corner in the final seconds to hold onto the 4-3 win. 

#20 Wake Forest 6, Lafayette 1 

Six different goal scorers found the back of the cage as no. 20 Wake Forest routed Lafayette 6-1 for their first win of the season. Meike Lanckohr got the scoring started in the first quarter two minutes, followed by Anna Gwiazdzinski and Sky Caron. Hannah Maxwell added another goal before the half, while Ashley Hart and Maggie Dickman tallied insurance goals in the second half. Ellie Todd and Tori Glaister combined for two saves in the win.  

#5 Iowa 4, Boston University 0 

Wesneski netted two goals in no. 5 Iowa’s 4-0 shutout over Boston University Her pair of goals opened and closed the scoring for the Hawkeyes. Sofie Stribos scored off a penalty corner to close out the second quarter. Herbine scored after intercepting a Terriers pass and winning a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The Iowa defense held Boston U to two shots and Grace McGuire made one save. 

Michigan State 5, UC Davis 2 

Hannah Jarvie scored twice while Georgia Davies tallied a goal and assist in a 5-2 Michigan State win. UC Davis took an early lead but Michigan State responded with goals from Davies and Jarvie in the first half. Jarvie added her second goal early in the second quarter, while Merel Hanssen and Ellie Rutherford also added goals. Michigan State outshot UC Davis 15-13 and Jardell made two saves. 

#1 Northwestern 2, #18 Duke 0 

Baekers tallied a goal and assist in no. 1 Northwestern’s 2-0 win over no. 18 Duke. Medina Garcia got the Wildcats on the board in the ninth minute after tipping in a shot from Baekers. Adding an insurance goal, Baekers scored late in the third quarter to secure the 2-0 win. Josephine Palde led the Duke offense with four shots and Piper Hampsch made nine save

#9 Louisville 4, Penn 1  

Schneider tallied a pair of goals in as no. 9 Louisville downed Penn in the opening game of the Ivy League/ACC crossover in Chapel Hill. Aimee Plumb opened the scoring in the sixth minute for her second goal of the season and Schneider added two goals in the second quarter.  Emilia Kaczmarcyk added another goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to ensure the 4-1 win. Sasha Elliot made seven saves for the win.  

Indiana 3, Stanford 2 (OT)

Maggie Carter scored on a backhander after beating a defender one-on-one to lift Indiana over Standford in overtime. Jule Hufer scored twice in the game, both game-tying goals after Stanford had taken the lead. Stanford outshot Indiana 13-4 and held a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners, but Loveridge made two saves in the win.  

#8 Rutgers 1, #15 UConn 0 (OT) 

Guillermina Causarano scored the overtime goal with three minutes remaining in the first overtime period to lift no. 8 Rutgers over no. 15 UConn. Iris Langejans set up Causarano for the game-winner. In a tight contest throughout regulation, Rutgers led 11-9 in shots and 3-2 in corners. Sophia Howard made six saves in the victory.  

#10 Syracuse 5, Kent State 0 

Comans scored a pair of goals in a 5-0 win over Kent State for no. 10 Syracuse’s third straight shutout. Boogert got the scoring started 1:24 into the contest, followed by Comans a couple minutes later for an early 2-0 Orange lead. Along with Comans, Lieke Leeggangers and Sabine vd Eijnden added goals in the second half for the 5-0 win. Borzymowski made three saves in the win as Syracuse outshot Kent State 19-12.
